FAQ

Here are some resources that can answer questions you may have about Okuma Apps. Our FAQs might even answer questions you didn’t know to ask.

What Internet browser is recommended for viewing information and downloading apps on the Okuma App Store?

While other browsers may function properly, we recommend using Google Chrome for the best browsing experience on this site. To download Chrome or to learn more, please visit their site.

When I download an app in Google Chrome, I get an error message saying the file has been blocked by Chrome.
What should I do?

Here is some information from Google Chrome's website regarding this type of alert.

Phishing and malware alerts

Google Chrome warns you if the site you're trying to visit is suspected of phishing or malware, using Google’s Safe Browsing technology.

Turn off phishing and malware detection

  1. Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Click Show advanced settings and find the "Privacy" section.
  4. Uncheck the box next to "Enable phishing and malware protection." Note: When you turn off these warnings you also turn off other malware and uncommon download warnings.

What is phishing and malware?

Phishing is when someone tries to trick you into sharing information, usually through a fake website. Malware is harmful software that is installed on your computer without your knowledge.

Can I use these apps on mobile devices? If so, what platform(s) do you support (iOS, Android, etc.)?

These apps are machine tool apps that were developed to be installed and used on Okuma machine tools equipped with the THINC®-OSP control. While some apps may install and run on a PC, they are only meaningful when installed on a machine. The apps cannot be downloaded to a mobile device, but you can browse the site from your smart phone and bookmark apps that you might like to investigate further once you are back at your machine.

I’m familiar with downloading apps for my phone. Is the process the same in the Okuma App Store?

The process is similar, but keep in mind that machine tool technology is more robust than the cell phone you carry in your hand. For brand new machines this process will be relatively simple, because you’ll have the latest software and will likely not need updates. Older machines may require some updating before proceeding. In all cases, remember that a quick call to your distributor is the fastest way to get started using apps.

I found an app I'd like to try. How do I put it on my machine and use it?

Go to "Create An Account" at the upper right of the MyOkuma.com webpage. Fill out the form and reply to the email we send asking you to create a password. When you're logged into your account, go the Apps page, select your app, click the "Download" button and save the file to your computer. Then place the app file onto a USB stick, plug this into the USB port on your THINC®-OSP control, and upload the file to the control. (If your control is networked to your business computers, you will be able to do this through your intranet rather than using a USB stick.) You will then be able to access your new app by opening the icon on your control screen. For more details, each app comes with a User Manual that explains the installation process.

What is an API, and why do I need it?

API stands for Application Programming Interface. This interface allows the machine tool and the application software to communicate and share data. For an app to work on your machine, your API needs to match the compatibility requirements listed for that app (e.g. “THINC API Version 1.9.1 or later”). If you don’t know which API version you currently have, you can use the SCOUT app to determine your machine's system configuration. You may also contact your distributor for assistance or in the event you need to upgrade your system.

I’d like to create a custom app for my shop. Do I need to hire a software developer to do this?

Not at all. You can go to the Microsoft Virtual Academy, sign yourself up, and start taking online .NET classes immediately. This is completely free of charge, and is an easy way to get started. Anyone can do this, even if you have zero programming experience. If you want help with a custom app, contact your distributor for personalized assistance.
